Notes: Lays Of The Deer Forest. With sketches of olden and modern deer-hunting; traits of natural history in the forest; traditions of the clans; miscellaneous notes. By John Sobieski and Charles Edward Stuart. William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, and Charles Dolman, London. 1848. 1st Edition. The authors true names were John Carter and Charles Manning Allen. Two volumes, 8vo, rebound in modern dark blue half leather and marbled paperboards, with gilt title and decorations on spine. 1st edition. Pp xiv, 381 + 2pp; viii, 560. Tinted frontispiece to second volume, which also includes a similar illustration face page 143. The volumes seem complete, but due to differences with other copies we have reasons to think that the illustrations were somehow misplaced during the rebinding. Minor flaws on the spine of volume one. Sporting verse together with tales of days on the hill. The Allen brothers were born in Wales in the late 18th century. They were later to claim to be the grandsons of Bonnie Prince Charlie, Charles Edward Stuart, 1720-1788, and in the 1871 census claimed their birthplace as Versailles. The pseudonyms for the two brothers are extremely confusing
