Fine binding by Samborski & Sutcliffe, London. half green calf with red gilt-lettered label, gilt-lined floral paper on inner and outer boards and end papers; spine divided into six compartments with gilt ornithological and foliage decoration; spine faded and slightly chipped; otherwise the binding is in very good condition. Vol. 1 is dated 1836; vols. 2 and 3 are dated 1834 and 1835 respectively (vol. 1 being a later issue of the original 1834 edition). The volumes are numbered 3-5 on the spine in accordance with their position in the ornithological section of Jardine’s series (the lettering reads, ‘Jardine’s Birds: [the volume number in Arabic numerals]: Gallinaceous’). Each volume is complete with 30 hand-coloured plates by James Hope Stewart in vols. 1-2, and by the famous Edward Lear in vol. 3, plus 1 hand-coloured title page vignette and 1 frontispiece. Vol. 1 contains a ‘Memoir of Aristotle’ by Andrew Crichton; vols. 1-2 (on gallinaceous birds in general and on game-birds respectively) are authored by William Jardine himself, vol. 3 (on pigeons) by Prideaux John Selby. The pages are clean.
