Notes: Seven Essays on Christian Greece, by Demetrios Bikelas (also known as Demetrius/Vikelas) Translated by John, Marquess of Bute. Reprinted from the Scottish Review. Printed by Alexander Gardner, London, 1890. 8vo, publisher cloth, gilt spine, First UK book edition, pp. (6), 298, 1 blank, 4 (Scottish review ad). An important collection of essays by the Greek writer and businessman Demetrius Vikelas, who would few years later become the first president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), from 1894 to 1896. He is also known for having left his immense library collection to the city of Heraklion in Crete, founding the Vikelaia Municipal Library. While the copy is in excellent condition inside, with rather ample margins and very clean, uncut pages, it suffered from a sever discoloration starting from the backboard and reaching the top of the spine. Here, the gilt has almost completely faded, but except a small chip missing from the bottom, the binding itself is still well solid.
