Charles Montagu Doughty was an English explorer who in the years 1876-77 travelled to North Africa and returned with a collection of Nabataean inscriptions he tried to sell, first to the British Museum, then to the Royal Geographical Society and finally to the Royal Museum for Ethnology in Berlin (Königliches Museum für Völkerkunde). Though his attempts to sell the inscriptions were unsuccessful, the Academie des Inscriptions in Paris were preparing to publish a corpus of Semitic inscriptions under the direction of the eminent French philologist Ernest Renan, a corpus of which this book became a part. Some of the plates in this book would appear in Doughty’s better known ‘Arabia Deserta’. Text in English (title and introduction in French).
